Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library puts books into the hands and hearts of children around the world. Imagination Library books are specially-selected, age-appropriate, high-quality titles. These books are delivered to registered children each month from birth to age five. Each one is personalized with the child’s name and mailed directly to the child’s home. This effort makes books exciting and shows the child that someone is thinking of them. Each year the program introduces books featuring Canadian authors and illustrators. Additionally, titles with themes and subjects that appeal to Canadian readers are included.
The first book a child receives is “The Little Engine That Could™”. The month a child turns five years old, they will receive “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!”.
It's the goal of the program and it's local affiliate, the Johnston Family Enrichment Fund, to ensure that all children under the age of 5 in Colchester County have access to books in their homes. We want to help families build their own home libraries and really build a love of reading in young children! Research has shown a significant connection between having books in the home and a child's future success.

We know what you mean. It really is a pretty amazing program, which is why JF Enrichment Fund so happy to bring it to Colchester County. There is no catch. There is no cost to the families who register their children. We will not share or use your information for any purpose other than this service.
Dolly Parton created the Imagination Library program to make books more available to young children, because early experience with reading is so important to their futures.
There is no cost to families in Colchester County who participate, because the cost for the program is covered by The Dolly Parton Foundation and the JF Enrichment Fund. Affiliates need to raise the funds to get the program started and have a fixed budget they work against.
Because the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is an international program, they operate on a very large scale, purchasing and mailing more than a million books each month for children around the world. So, they are able to provide the program at a cost low enough to be covered by donations and all families can participate for free.
In Canada, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Program mails out books to almost 50,000 children a month. We must place our book orders a month in advance to do this. Depending on when you register your child, it may take up to eight to twelve weeks for the first book to arrive. After that, the books will come every month.
For example, if you registered your child on January 6th and were approved by your local affiliate in January, you would receive your first book in March.
All titles in the Imagination Library are published by Penguin Random House and carefully selected by a panel of experts in early childhood and reading. Our Book Selection Committee meets annually to review and refresh the book list, drawing on their years of experience in early years and education. This ensures each book is age-appropriate, and the list features a broad range of titles, authors, and genres.

Absolutely! We encourage families to register all of their children under the age of five for this program. The books are mailed in the child’s name, so they get to create their own personal library. The books are based on age so children of different ages will get different books (after the initial Welcome Book). Twins will receive the same book titles and children can only be registered once with the program. Book List for 2024

Children need to live in Colchester County to be a part of the program. The child's legal guardian is the only person who can give consent and enrol their child. Children can only be enrolled in the program once.
We encourage you to let parents and guardians know of the program, the more books we can get into the hands of children the better, but since enrollment requires consent from an authorized adult, no one other than the legal guardian may enroll children.
